Routine Cleanings
-
Everyone, including young children, should visit a family dentist twice a year for checkups, cleanings, and x-rays. These checkups give our family dentistry team a chance to monitor and address any concerns or changes in your or your child’s smiles. Kids’ smiles, in particular, are growing and developing rapidly and we want to make sure they are reaching all of those milestones. By bringing them in twice a year we can make sure that everything is developing properly while also cleaning you and your family’s teeth to reduce the risk for cavities and gum disease.
-
During your initial consultation at Robison & Campbell Family Dentistry, you will receive a visual examination conducted by your family dentist, followed by charting and periodontal probing before a personalized treatment plan is put into place. X-rays will also be taken of your periodontal structures so that a proper diagnosis can be made of any proximal decay existing in your teeth that would have otherwise been overlooked.
Dental Fillings
-
If you just found out that you have a cavity, you may be wondering how we plan to treat the issue. Fortunately, through routine cleanings every six months we are more likely to detect these issues when they are only a slight inconvenience rather than a serious problem. If you notice sudden tooth pain, tooth sensitivity, or a dark spot on your tooth then you’ll want to come in for an evaluation before your bi-annual cleaning. Having a cavity is no fun, but a dental filling from Robison & Campbell Family Dentistry in Dalton, GA can restore the tooth after decay has been removed.
-
A dental filling uses special material to fill the spaces where decay has been removed to restore the tooth to its nature appearance and strength. While the tooth-colored resin used for a dental filling may also be used for purely cosmetic reasons such as hiding a small discoloration, chip or gap between your teeth, in most cases a dental filling is used to treat a cavity.
If you have a cavity the first thing Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell will need to do is remove the decay. When decay destroys tooth enamel you must come into our practice as soon as possible to remove the decayed enamel so that it doesn’t continue to erode the tooth. Once we have checked to make sure all decay has been removed, then we will begin to rebuild the tooth using a dental filling.
-
As you may already know, a dental filling can be made from different materials. Traditionally, dental fillings were made from different types of metals, such as silver. These types of fillings are typically called amalgam fillings because, as the name suggests, they are made from an amalgam of different metals. Although not offered here at Robison & Campbell Family Dentistry, gold is also sometimes used for dental fillings. As dental technology has progressed, however, the most popular type of dental filling is composite fillings, which are made from resin that can be adjusted to match the color of a patient's natural tooth. These fillings are ideal for restorations in visible areas of the tooth because they are virtually undetectable.
-
For purely aesthetic reasons, most patients opt for tooth-colored fillings made from composite resin. If you choose a tooth-colored filling we can choose the shade of the resin to match the tooth so that the dental filling isn’t visible. Of course, metal fillings are still used today because they are more resilient than even tooth-colored fillings and can be a better option for molars and back teeth, which take on more force and pressure from the jaws when chewing and speaking.
If you are getting a composite resin filling we will apply the moldable resin in layers. Each layer will then be hardened immediately using a special dental light. We will continue to apply layer after layer until the tooth is completely filled. Once the last layer is hardened we may still need to trim the filling before giving it a final polish.
Crowns & Bridges
-
While tooth loss is considered a serious issue it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to treat. In fact, Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell offer a wide variety of tooth replacement options to fit all your needs and goals so that you regain that healthy smile. One tooth replacement option that has been around for a long time because of its reliability and quality is a dental bridge.
-
The purpose of the dental bridge is to replace one or more teeth in a row and to fill the gap left by the missing teeth. A dental bridge has two crowns on both sides of the restoration with a false tooth or teeth in the middle. The crowns are placed over a nearby healthy tooth to help support and anchor the bridge into place. The artificial tooth or teeth in the middle, also called pontics, can be made from materials such as gold or porcelain.
Dental bridges are a great option for many people looking to restore their smile and improve the ability to chew or speak, which are often affected by tooth loss. Also, because natural teeth begin to shift into the open gap left by the missing tooth, getting a dental bridge prevents teeth from moving out of place and affecting the overall structure and shape of your face. A bridge also improves your bite after tooth loss so that other teeth don’t become damaged or worn down due to an uneven bite.
When you come into our Dalton, GA dental office to get a bridge, we will first need to examine your smile and make sure your mouth is healthy enough for treatment. Next, we will need to prepare the two natural teeth on each side of the gap so that they are ready for a crown. These teeth are reshaped to make room for the crowns.
Then, we will take impressions of your teeth and a dental laboratory will take these impressions and make your very own dental bridge to fit your mouth. In the meantime, a temporary bridge will be worn until your permanent one is ready.
During your next visit, the temporary bridge will be removed and the permanent bridge will be fitted and adjusted. It may take a couple visits to make sure that the bridge fits properly and that your bite isn’t affected. Once Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell have determined that your bridge is a good fit, it will be cemented into place.
-
There are several ways a tooth can be repaired after sustaining damage from decay or trauma. One of the most common and reliable ways dentists can restore both function and form to a defective tooth is by applying a dental crown. Crowns are a versatile restoration: they finish off root canals, complete dental implants, and fill in empty spaces with a bridge. In many instances, crowns allow the root structure of natural teeth to remain fixed in place while compensating for the loss of the upper portion of the tooth.
In size and shape, crowns look like the top portion of a natural tooth. They can be made from a variety of durable materials, while porcelain is more commonly used for teeth that show while smiling or talking. All crowns have a hollowed-out section inside, which allows them to fit snugly over the top of a natural tooth. The only exception are crowns that are used in the middle section of a bridge; these restorations are solid because they are taking the place of a missing natural tooth.
Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell prepare natural teeth for crowns by first taking measurements of the space where the crown will be placed. The next part of the process involves removing any decay and preparing the tooth for the dental crown. This shape will correspond with the crown, which will be custom designed in a laboratory. A bonding cement is applied to the prepared tooth and the crown is attached in place, with any necessary adjustments made to ensure a perfect fit.
With proper care and regular checkups, crowns can last as long as 20 years, allowing the wearer to smile and eat normally without risking the health of the remaining teeth.
Implant Restoration
-
You are dealing with tooth loss and you’re wondering which tooth replacement option is best for you. Many people are turning to dental implants because this lifelong restoration mimics the look and feel of a real tooth in a unique way that other artificial teeth just can’t. We know that nothing is more important than finding a trusted dentist to place and maintain your new tooth.
-
Here at our practice, Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell have received specialized training to be able to place the abutment and the crown portion of your dental implant. To get a dental implant, we will first refer you to a local oral surgeon or prosthodontist that we know and trust to place your implant. Once the implant has been placed, then you can turn to our team to complete your restoration.
The implant will need anywhere from three to six months to naturally fuse with the jawbone after surgery. Once this naturally occurring fusion is complete, then our team will place the abutment on top of the implant. The abutment simply connects with the implant, which sits under the gums within the jawbone, with the false tooth (most typically a dental crown.) Once the abutment has been placed we will need to wait a few weeks for the gums around the implant to fully heal before we cement the crown into place.
The crowns that we offer at our practice are always custom-fitted to your smile and are made from the highest-quality porcelain to ensure that it looks just like the rest of your smile. Once the crown has been cemented over the abutment, you won’t be able to tell the difference between your implant and the rest of your natural smile.
You will also turn to us every six months for checkups and cleanings. During these checkups, we will also check the health and function of the implant to make sure that everything looks and feels okay. If your crown ever cracks or falls out, we are the first dentists you’ll turn to.
-
If you are interested in what dental implants can offer your smile and want to take the next steps, Dr. Robison and Dr. Campbell at Robinson & Campbell Family Dentistry are here to help with implant restorations.

Dental Bonding and Contouring
Even small chips, discolorations or gaps between teeth can still leave you feeling self-conscious about your smile. Cosmetic dentistry isn’t just for tackling more moderate imperfections. In fact, bonding and contouring can help buff away small chips in teeth, while bonding uses a tooth-colored material to cover tiny flaws and reshape and brighten a tooth. These non-invasive cosmetic treatments are great for tackling more minor esthetic concerns.
Dental Veneers
These very thin porcelain shells are custom-made to cover the front surface of your teeth. They are bonded directly to the front, where they help to reshape, brighten and realign your teeth all at once. The best part about this procedure is that there is minimal tooth preparation needed before the veneers are attached. If you’ve ever wished your teeth were a little longer, more even, or perfectly straight, veneers may be ideal for you.
Take-Home Teeth Whitening
